Readers,

I will admit it—I just read Anne of Green Gables for the first time. I haven’t become so enamored that I am planning to read the rest of the series or watch the moves or TV series based on the character, but I now understand the continued appeal of this delightful tale. Anne’s author L.M. Montgomery writes that “it was November--the month of crimson sunsets, parting birds, deep, sad hymns of the sea, passionate wind-songs in the pines.” Isn’t that luscious writing? And here we are, already in November.

Funding concerns are settled (a decrease, but not as much as it might have been), the budget for 2018 is set, the strategic plan for the next five years is in draft form waiting for me to present at the next board meeting, and a sense of things-almost-completed touches us as the year winds down. But much happens first; the annual children’s Christmas programs, the big Winter Wonderland open house, and staff caroling on the steps. I’m feeling very philosophical today, but how can these be so near on the horizon when it seems that 2017 just started?

Something very exciting happened to me yesterday—a reference question came in to the library, and the answer was found in research I did in 1987, thirty years ago this summer. I had typed up all my research results at that time, and was able to find that document yesterday in our Local History room’s files. A reporter who might not have been born in 1987 thanked me yesterday for that long-ago assistance. Chances are that no one else has looked at it or needed it in all the years since. It reminded me of the passage of time, but also of the enduring value of library work, and how I need to reinforce in the staff today that what they are doing matters…for today’s patrons, and also for those decades in the future. And they won’t believe how fast those years will fly, doing what you love.

May you all be doing what you love, and may it include a good book!

The one I’m loving now is Gabrielle Zevin’s Young Jane Young which, like all great books, is hard to describe. I just read a review and was thrilled to find it on the new book shelf. Entertaining and thought-provoking, it starts with a college intern’s affair with a married congressman and that action’s impact on her family and her life, but broadens to shed light on women’s roles and society’s double standards. Zevin had a real winner with her The storied life of A.J. Fikry, a favorite with my book club.

Happy reading,

Director, Massillon Public Library

Ohio State Football: the Forgotten Dawn

Wednesday, November 8
6:00 p.m.

Featuring Robert J. Roman, author of Ohio State Football: the Forgotten Dawn

Roman draws on extensive archival research to tell the untold story of the early days of football at Ohio's flagship public university. The game was different: fields were rarely level and often rocky, eleven men played both sides of the ball, quarterbacks were often the smallest men on the team, and coaches were not allowed to communicate with the players during a game. After Ohio State's first game outside the state, a victory in Kentucky, the team had to run for its life, chased by an angry mob of stone-throwing locals! This event is free and open to the public. Reservations are suggested and may be made by calling 330-832-9831 ext. 312. Come get your own signed copy for the special price of only $20 and to learn more about how this great team got started.

"Up Close and Impersonal:
Patterns in Nature and Elsewhere"

Works by Krystian Hall on display in the Computer Center from October 30 - December 30

Krystian Hall is a ceramicist who also paints and does other stuff good, too. She studied art under the tutelage of Ron White, Barb Drennan, Claire Murray-Adams, Gary Spangler, Chris Craft, Tyrus Clutter, and Marino Moretti at various times between the years of 2000-2008. In 2006, she spent four months living in a convent in Italy, studying the fresco cycles of Giotto, Michelangelo, Raphael, and other greats of the Italian Renaissance. She draws inspiration for most of her pieces from pop culture and historical subjects in classical art: except these ones. They're inspired by various shapes, colors and patterns found wherever you look. Her favorite non-clay medium is mixed media, but she is known to dabble in jewelry, photography, writing, theater, wine making, war, canning, gardening and anything else to which one attaches the word "art." Right now, she's just excited when she gets enough time away from her other duties as a parent, wife, and as a "little-L" librarian to be able to throw paint onto whatever happens to be close at hand. She wishes to send special love out to public school quality fish sticks, because nobody else will.

If you are interested in purchasing a piece of art, please contact Krystian Hall directly at hallkr@massillonlibrary.org or 330-832-9831 ext. 330.
