Library News & Notes

Friends,
That old axiom “I have good news and bad news” seems appropriate as I update you concerning library funding. We are somewhat relieved with the final resolution of our piece of the State budget, in that we WILL be cut…but not as much as originally feared.
The House version of the budget cut libraries’ share of the state’s General Revenue Fund from 1.7% down to 1.66%, but the Senate version changed that to 1.68%, and that change “stuck” through final versions and on to the Governor’s signature.
Are we thrilled to see a decrease of any kind? Of course not. But in a tight budget process where legislators had to fit in funding for the opioid crisis among so many other priorities, it could have been worse. We are especially grateful for the support of our State Senator Scott Oelslager who chairs the Senate Finance Committee. During a June 12th press conference of Senate leadership, Oelslager spoke about the importance of Ohio libraries.
You can view the clip at: http://olc.org/blog/2017/06/13/ohio-senate-unveils-budget/
And thanks to so many who made your voices heard by calling or writing your representatives in Columbus. For the next two years we can breathe a collective sigh of relief, and get back to making a difference in lives.
Since last month we have made a lot of progress towards developing our next strategic plan. We finished collecting community surveys, and held three very constructive focus groups of library staff and the public. One thing that the consultants from State Library could share with me is that our community is extremely engaged, and cares deeply about the Massillon Public Library. And the staff love what they do. I could have (and did!) tell them that.
If we ever doubt that, we get reminders. There is a “wall of kindness” at the Main library during summer reading club—the theme this year is “Build a better world.” This sticky note has us all energized:
Don’t be sad…we’re here for you, and intend to be here for years to come, even as formats and services change to meet your needs!
Director, Massillon Public Library

The library would like to spread the word that we are NOT affiliated with a Gemstone Marketing company in Texas whose sales reps are calling area businesses to advertise on book bags. We worked with them one year and they did NOT fulfill their promises to advertisers, and they have been informed not to use our name in their solicitations.
Please let director Sherie Brown know if you or your business has been approached about this "opportunity." 330-832-9831, ext. 314.
