Friends,
Perhaps it comes as no surprise, but as I look over my to-do list, most of the items involve writing in some way.
Many days, just responding to emails (50+ so far this morning!) comprises the bulk of my job, but today I will also write thank-you letters to some donors, work on an annual report for the library board, and start a short acceptance speech for an award that’s being given to the library—the Chamber of Commerce has named us the “Nonprofit of the Year!”
I jokingly say that my minor in psychology has come in pretty handy in life, more so than my major in Medieval Literature! But the truth is that WRITING has been the skill I call on the most. It has helped us get grants, and to plainly explain financial matters such that our community has been consistently supportive of levy renewals. (Don’t worry, that is several years off in the future!) I know my own strengths and weaknesses, and although I’ll never be creative enough to write a novel, I can draft great letters and emails, because I purposefully write just as if I’m talking to you. With lots of punctuation!!! HA That style might not adhere to professional guidance, but it’s the way I like to talk and write. I hope you all similarly find your voice and USE it, in whatever you pursue.
This all leads me to write some words I honestly never thought I would ever say. Along with most everyone, I thought “they would carry me out of this place.” But…this is my last newsletter communication with you, because I am retiring after more than 43 years at MPL! The end of April will be my last working date. From the start, this has been the best employer, with the best coworkers, patrons, and supporters, and has offered the best opportunity to grow. I have been truly blessed. With the excellent leadership of the library board, our future is sound, and they will find a great director in coming months with the same commitment to service.
I remain thankful for the gift of words, to speak, read, and write. And I’m grateful for you all.
