Learners,
After an astute friend pointed out that all of my book recommendations are “the opposite of what I would read,” I had to admit that my preference for gendered and historical fiction had me in a rut—one that obviously did not resonate with a science teacher. At the same time, I needed a book to review for a speaking engagement. Enter astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Starry Messenger: Cosmic Perspective on Civilization. I’m so glad I challenged myself. War, politics, religion…all benefit from the perspective of looking down on our fragile planet. Far from depressing, this wake-up call challenges the reader to appreciate the unique blessing of being alive, and to realize how we humans are more alike than different. Extremely readable, it reminded me why so many of us identify as “space geeks!”
That leads me to the theme of this newsletter: learning something new. Whether you stretch your mind with a physical, audio, or digital book, an instructional DVD, one of the databases your library provides (Mango for language instruction, for example) or attending an informative program like those listed here…2023 can be the year that you expand your horizons. I’ll be right there with you. I just checked out a “Great Course” on mastering Tai Chi, and plan to read next the blockbuster The Song of the Cell: An Exploration of Medicine and the New Human by Siddhartha Mukherjee.
Let’s get smarter together.
