Library Happenings - December 2020
Dear Library Friends,
As I write this, we are not many days past the election when voters in EVERY precinct in Massillon, Brewster, and Navarre overwhelmingly supported the renewal of the Library’s operating levy! Just saying THANK YOU seems like not enough to express our deep appreciation and commitment to this community, but all the gushing in the world can’t say it any better. What a bright end to a challenging year!
Honestly, several happy situations have visited me in recent days that bode SO well for our long-term future. We were informed of the Library being named a beneficiary of an estate, although we sincerely hope that “collecting” on those funds is many years off. The family of another dear library supporter asked how they could make a donation for upcoming library projects in memory of a family member. (If you would like to learn more about how to ensure a gift for the Library, go to www.massillonlibrary.org, click on "About Us" and then scroll down to "Support Your Library" for more information. Please call me at 330-832-9831, x314 if you have any questions.) Some COVID relief funds are soon going to allow for the purchase of a technology-enabled vehicle that can go outside our walls to provide programming and Wi-Fi access. Several big projects that we’ve dreamed of for years might soon happen. I’ll give you more details when I’m able. Exciting programs are already planned for The Big Read and for One Book One Community. PRISM awards and the Poetry Read-In are on the calendar, even if we have to do it by Zoom. And, as winter weather approaches, we will be continuing our Curbside Pickup at Main and Askren and Lobby Pickup at Belloni, if you need it!
I've heard of various library closures for days or weeks recently because of COVID among library staff. We have been very fortunate that no staff have tested positive so far! We also have a very aggressive quarantine process for anyone who has been exposed or is symptomatic. Individual room air purifiers have been added in addition to the germ-zapping Halo units installed on all our big air handlers. I want to assure any library visitor that we are doing everything possible to keep our library buildings and our Bookmobile as healthy as possible. However, we still can’t get completely “back to normal” until the danger has passed. That’s why I still have to answer all the questions about opening up the Computer Center, meeting rooms, or casual seating to “Sorry. Not yet.” But, as inspirational speaker Zig Ziglar says, “Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations. The best is yet to come.” I truly believe that, and it’s thanks to each of you!
Happy Holidays!
P.S. - In the last month as I was taking care of my hubby after his back surgery and working from home (He’s doing great! Thanks!), I read three books….and I didn’t like ANY of them enough to recommend! I’m hoping my next batch is better!
