When he dives in to rescue her, he can't begin to imagine the horrors that her life will reveal to him. Mina Harcourt is returning to London from an expedition to the Carpathian Sphinx. In her possession is a gold box of great power and mystery that may be related to an Egyptian priestess. Bartholomew Thorne is one of London's most powerful men and the benefactor of the Thorne Mission House, which his sister, Winifred, oversees, and where Lucinda and her recently deceased son worked and lived. When Bram and Mina learn that Lucinda's son was killed by Winifred for dark purposes, they set out to put an end to the Thornes' nefarious actions. Mysterious and thrilling, Masello's latest novel (after The Jekyll Revelation, 2016) is another example of wonderful historical fiction. It begins by setting the stage, literally and figuratively, for adventure by alternating between Bram Stoker's life as a theater manager and struggling writer, and an Indiana Jones-style mystique with ancient magic and artifacts that threaten to wreak havoc on society. When Stoker meets Mina Harcourt, a Gypsy woman who comes to England with a gold box and not much else, they work together to determine where the box and its contents came from. A matchgirl from the local mission house joins them, and it's immediately obvious the mission is hiding some dark secrets. Fans of his previous horror-thriller hybrids will recognize Masello's vivid storytelling and his way of truly immersing readers into the worlds he creates; fans of ancient Egyptian mythology will especially enjoy the story. While it is clear from the beginning that sinister things are afoot, there are several different aspects of the story that are carefully wound together until the story's conclusion to keep readers guessing.--Carrie Rasak Copyright 2018 Booklist
