A PACT IS MADE...
When a young, shy girl named Ava discovers that the demon who haunts her is actually the spirit of an ancient alien queen named Wrathia, the two form a powerful pact--in exchange for a better life, Ava must help Wrathia seek revenge against TITAN, the god-like being who destroyed her empire. To aid Ava against TITAN, she must first assemble Wrathia's most trusted warriors and the lifeforms they haunt. The only problem is, she doesn't know what they look like, or where to find them. Joining her on her mission is Maggie, Ava's former best friend and fellow refugee, Odin, a brooding young man with a mysterious past, and Gil, a dedicated follower of TITAN. And unbeknownst to Ava, all three of them are hiding their own inner demons...looks like Wrathia's army might be closer than she thinks.Reviews (1)
School Library Journal Review
Gr 7 Up--Ava has more than one demon in her life: her own metaphorical demons, and also a literal one, the vengeful Wrathia Bellarmina. Mentally beaten, ostracized, and at odds with this spirit that haunts her, the copper-skinned girl finally accedes to an alliance after deciding she does have one desire in life. But to get it, she will have to enlist those implanted with the souls of Wrathia's warriors to fight the immeasurably powerful Titan. From the timid Ava to the faithful Gil, each character has a distinct palette for their model and speech bubbles that reflects their personality. On top of this, the Fus takes great care to "spotlight" the doll-like character designs with contrast techniques, effectively zoning in on the cast's actions and reactions. This first print volume of the multimedia webcomic, which includes some animations and music online, grounds its stakes in its mesmerizing painterly visuals and psychological themes. Then, it amplifies readers' interest with a movie-scene flair, regardless of whether the cast is combatting an intergalactic cult, or a character's own insecurities. VERDICT This graphic novel series is brewing a potent fairy tale-esque potion of phantasmal illustrations and fractured characters seeking their desires.--Rachel Forbes
