Grace (Grace and the Guiltless) still searches for the outlaws who murdered her family. Meanwhile, she has become a bounty hunter and questions her decision to leave the Ndeh tribe and especially Joe, for whom she harbors romantic feelings. A chance to confront the Guiltless Gang reignites her struggle to balance vengeance and romance. An action-packed Western, despite some trite contrivances. (c) Copyright 2016. Kirkus Review
Typical Western elements combine with the breathy emotions of a traditional romance in this sequel to Grace and the Guiltless (2014). Now a bounty hunter, Grace has had some success but is frequently so sidetracked by her emotional connection to Joe that she can't quite remember that she is bent on revenge for the ruthless killing of her family. There's plenty to keep her busy in this section of the Arizona desert. Grace encounters rapists and tries to protect a widow and her young daughter when a train robbery seems in the offing. She is also moved to try to help a Ndeh friend whose father wants her to marry against her decided preference. But Joe is paramount in her thoughts. The fast pacing is as predictable as the prose: "Safe in his encircling arms, she laid her head on his chest, feeling the rapid beat of his heart." Grace's struggle to stay focused on the outlaws while she would prefer to swoon with Joe undermines her portrayal as an otherwise strong, capable, and independent female. A third book is indicated, as Grace and Joe's hot moments are cut short and evil outlaws are still at large. Despite the forced-marriage subplot, Johnson pays less attention to the Ndeh tribe of the Apache nation that featured prominently in the first book and much more to the bad guys. A shoot-'em-up with more smooching than shooting. (Western. 14-18) Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
Booklist Review
The second book in the Wanted series finds 17-year-old Grace struggling to make ends meet while working as a bounty hunter. Although she is still focused on avenging her family's death at the hands of the Guiltless Gang, the trail has gone cold, and tracking down other criminals nets just enough money to pay the bills. Still, she misses Joe and the warm community of the Ndeh tribe with whom he lives. She wonders if leaving was the right thing to do, but any doubts are erased when Grace suspects the Guiltless Gang is planning a train robbery. Returning fans won't be disappointed in the breakneck pacing, tense fight scenes, and increasingly steamy romantic scenes with Joe. Throughout, Grace shows some character growth, struggling to balance her need for revenge with greater happiness. The author tries to portray the Ndeh in a positive light, but it is negated somewhat by problematic dialogue and romanticized depictions. Despite its technical shortcomings, this will satisfy readers looking for a fun, action-packed adventure with one tough heroine.--Hayes, Summer Copyright 2015 Booklist
