So much of the literature on the First World War centers on the tranch war-fare of the Western Front. While these were essential battlegrounds, the war was a global conflict, and in order to fully understand it, we need to cast our sights across several continents. This is eminent historian Keith Jeffery's accomplishment in his magisterial 1916: A Global History, which focuses on a sequence of key events that unfolded around the world that year, and casts the Great War in an entirely new light.
