Booklist Review

It's common for politicians to write books, especially if they have presidential ambitions. But most of those books are for adults. Here, presidential hopeful Kamala Harris (who has also come out with an autobiography this season) provides something for the younger set. Born to a mother of Indian descent and a father from Jamaica, Harris experienced several cultures growing up. She takes readers through her story by introducing as heroes those who surrounded her throughout her life. Her parents, teachers, sister, friends, and later colleagues and those she looked up to made her the person she became. In a nice twist, she brings readers into the story by ending each two-page spread with a question: ""Who makes you feel special?"" Who do you know that works hard?"" The sprightly illustrations have plenty of energy and cheerfulness; almost every character is smiling. Highlights of the book are the family photographs that enhance the end pages. Whatever Harris' political fortunes, this offers a solid message: a superhero could be anyone, including you.--Ilene Cooper Copyright 2019 Booklist
