Summary
FBI profiler Karen Vail is haunted by a serial killer from her rookie days in a "pulse-pounding" thriller by a USA Today bestselling author ( Providence Journal ).
New York City: home to world-renowned museums, theater, restaurants, iconic sports franchises. Central Park. Wall Street. And an infamous serial killer who's terrorized the Big Apple for decades.
The year is 1995 and the NYPD has just graduated a promising new patrol officer named Karen Vail. The rookie's first day on the job is anything but easy when she finds herself at the crime scene of a young woman murdered in an unusual manner. Vail is unsure of what she's looking at or what it means--but it's a case that will weigh on her mind for nearly twenty years.
As the years pass, Vail's career takes unexpected twists and turns--as does the case that's come to be known as Hades. Now a skilled FBI profiler, will Vail be in a better position to catch the killer? Or will Hades prove to be Karen Vail's hell on earth?
The character who has captivated readers worldwide--and who won the praise of literary giants Michael Connelly, James Patterson, and Nelson DeMille--returns in a story that captures the experiences that shaped the revered profiler and made her the top cop she is today.

Publisher's Weekly Review
Jacobson's intriguing sixth Karen Vail novel (after 2013's No Way Out) chronicles the first case that his heroine handled as a rookie NYPD patrol officer. In 1995, Vail views her first murder victim, a woman savagely attacked in a Manhattan brownstone. Sgt. Carmine Russo, a seasoned homicide detective, acts as Vail's mentor in what develops into a serial killer case. The killings continue over the years, always with the same telltale MO and lack of meaningful evidence. Meanwhile, in a tragic story that parallels Vail's rise to successful FBI profiler, a fight at an Astoria, Queens, bowling alley in 1973 starts a downward spiral that eventually crushes two immigrant Greek families and colors the childhoods of brother and sister Cassandra and Dimitri and their friend Niklaus. Readers will have little trouble figuring out the killer's identity, but series fans will appreciate the extensive background information that details Vail's growth as an investigator. Booklist Review
In the sixth Karen Vail novel (following No Way Out, 2013), Jacobson takes the reader back to Vail's first day on the NYPD. We know Vail as a no-nonsense FBI profiler, but in 1995 she was a patrol officer whose first case involved a serial murderer known as the Hades killer. The book jumps from a bowling-alley fight that destroys a Greek family in 1970s Astoria to Vial's days with the NYPD in the 1990s to the present. Jacobson offers snapshots of Vail's growing professional relationship with homicide detective Russo, her deteriorating personal relationship with Deacon Tucker, and her sharpening instincts for getting inside the mind of a killer. The thread weaving through all three time periods is the Hades killer an unsolved case in Vail's otherwise spotless record. When a new body turns up, Vail can't resist joining her old friends to unmask the underworld fiend. A fast-paced, satisfying thriller, though readers new to the series may have found the flashbacks more meaningful had there been a little more backstory.--Keefe, Karen Copyright 2014 Booklist
Library Journal Review
In her sixth outing (after No Way Out), FBI profiler Karen Vail finds herself working on a case that has haunted her since she was a NYPD rookie cop investigating a young woman's murder back in 1995. The serial killer known as Hades has eluded Vail for three decades, even as her life has taken surprising directions. While she pursues the investigation, the novel goes back in time even further to the early 1970s, when a family is caught in turmoil. A man simply defending himself becomes a pariah, and even though he's found innocent in a court of law, the judgment of his peers costs him his job and respect. The tragedy that follows will echo into our protagonist's history as well. VERDICT Jacobson takes the reader into the past so we can follow Vail's life in law enforcement up to the present, providing a more enriching profile of his series heroine. The final result is a compelling and chilling thriller that continues to showcase the author's talent for great characters and plots.-Jeff Ayers, Seattle P.L. (c) Copyright 2014.
