School Library Journal Review
Gr 2-5-Who can resist the cuteness of a crested Peruvian guinea pig or fuzzy lop-eared rabbit? Readers can, when the joys and responsibilities involved in choosing and bringing home a pet; feeding and caring for it; and understanding, playing, and/or training it are surveyed in these charming series titles showcasing animal portraiture, with fetching color photos emphasizing the adorableness of potential pets. Though an array of these bright-eyed creatures lovingly gaze from the page, their alluring countenance is reasonably contrasted against the more practical aspects of owning a pet, such as the time commitment necessary for cleaning cages, exercising and regularly feeding your pet, and maintaining general health and well-being according to established guidelines and best practices. Checklists, background info, and expert advice are rendered in a well-organized, tractable format that differs slightly in each installment. Horn Book Review
Conversational texts cover basics for young pet owners: choosing a healthy pet; creating a safe and comfortable living environment; plus care, feeding, play, and training. The authors are forthright about tougher aspects of pet ownership without condescension. Text-heavy, crowded spreads include informational sidebars and photos of children and adults interacting with the cute animals. Reading list, websites. Ind.
