In this stunning hybrid of art and exposition, music journalist Hiatt weaves firsthand accounts from the late David Bowie's collaborators and kindred spirits into a rich tapestry of the legendary "starman" as clear-headed professional, gentle perfectionist, and musical oracle. From these diverse portraits there emerges a common thread of the artist's preternatural sense of character-Bowie worked with the best by bringing out the best in those he worked with, surrounding himself with artists he trusted to realize his ever-changing vision. Highlights include tales from lifelong friend George Underwood recounting Bowie's early years, particularly a formative Little Richard concert in 1962 that forever shaped his understanding of music as performance. Guitarist Carlos Alomar, Bowie's tour director for 30 years, provides insightful commentary not only on the musician's creative process but also on the fraught humanity behind a seemingly untouchable rock icon.
