Kate Atherley is a mathematician and refugee from the technology industry. She has written two other books for Krause Craft-- Custom Socks and The Beginners Guide to Writing Knitting Patterns . She is Knitty's lead technical editor and a regular contributor to books and magazines. She lives in Toronto with her husband and their challenging, but mostly adorable, rescue hound, Dexter.

Knitting designer Atherley here brings her considerable technical knowledge of knitwear design to custom-fit mittens and gloves. As with her earlier book, Custom Socks, Atherley begins with a survey of knitters and their friends and families, allowing her to make some generalizations about hand size. This is followed by mitten- and glove-specific knitting tips, as well as basic patterns that can be adapted and customized. Atherley also provides a series of patterns for mittens, gloves, and fingerless gloves in a variety of sizes and cabled and stranded colorwork. VERDICT While there are thousands of mitten and glove patterns out there, Atherley brings a mathematician's viewpoint to the craft.
