Meet Heidi--if you can find her, that is! Heidi is the best at hiding: in school, at the playground, or in the park. Heidi's friends know how much she loves hiding, so they always let her play and win. But Heidi learns the importance of sharing the limelight with other people when being too good at hiding makes her miss all the other fun her friends are having--and how much more fun it can be when you appreciate what your friends are good at too! She learns Freddie is great at bouncing on hippity-hops, Katie is sensational at roller-skating, and Lizzie is incredible at climbing. Heidi then realizes that she has fun doing the activities her friends like, even if she isn't the best.
Author Notes
Fiona Woodcock knew ever since growing up in Leicester, England, that she wanted to draw for a living. Since graduating from Glasgow School of Art, she's been working freelance in London on animated films, commercials, and other illustration work. She derives inspiration from new places, brilliant people, bold patterns, structures, and subtle details in everyday life. Hiding Heidi is her debut picture book. PreS-Gr 2-Heidi has a special talent. She is a natural at hiding. She always wants to play hide-and-seek with her friends, and they agree until one day Heidi hides too well. At her birthday party, she hides and her friends can't find her, so they go on to have fun at the party without her. The next day, Heidi decides to play different games with her friends-games that her friends are good at. The four friends have lots of fun, and Heidi realizes that they don't always need to play hide-and-seek just for her. This is illustrator Woodcock's first picture book. She also has a line of greeting cards, and this is reflected in the illustrations for this book. Each page could be a greeting card, with bright, translucent colors against a cream background. Soft charcoal lines with a smattering of dots subtly shade the hand-cut rubber-stamped and stenciled images. Geometric shapes naturally compel readers' eyes to find Heidi's perfect hiding spot on the page. It will be difficult not to be charmed by Heidi and her chameleon talent, and the subtle lesson about being a good friend is a bonus. Heidi, an expert at hiding, blends into her surroundings so well that she wins every game of hide-and-seek she plays with her friends. When Heidi's excellent hiding ruins her birthday ("Sorry, Heidi," her friends tell her. "We couldn't find you, and we got tired of playing hide-and-seek"), she decides to embrace other games and activities that give her companions a chance to shine. In her first picture book, British author-illustrator Woodcock creates smudgy, screenprintlike scenes that combine soft, gray detailing with bright pops of color. Heidi changes her clothing in nearly every scene, allowing her to camouflage herself in a variety of landscapes: as Heidi and three friends run along the shore, her yellow-and-gray dress echoes the triangular sails of the boats behind them, and an outfit of red overalls and a knit cap perfectly match the tree trunk she hides behind during one of the children's hide-and-seek games. A little girl has a big talentblending into the background. Is it fun for all?Readers first glimpse pale-skinned, black-haired Heidi riding a scooter in front of a blue picket fence; the stripes of her dress and of the long scarf trailing behind her make her easy to miss at first glance. The same thing happens when shes lying on a flowered couch, standing in front of the chalkboard, or playing in the forest. Shes not exactly Waldo, but its easy to skip over her. Naturally, Heidi loves to play hide-and-seek. During her birthday party, she blends easily into a bunch of balloonsbut her friends get tired of looking for her and instead dig into some yummy ice cream sundaes. After the party, Heidi has a good long think, and the next day, when Freddie suggests a hippity-hop race, Heidis quick to second the motion. Freddies very good at it. They have a roller-skate race; Katie wins. And Lizzies the best at climbing the jungle gym. Heidis happy with her friends. (With her dark skin and puffy, tightly curled pigtails, Katie is the only obvious character of color.) Heidis hiding provides some nifty optical illusions, and Woodcocks illustrations have an appealing gossamer quality. The story itself is told with similar subtle economy, which could elude younger readers. A lovely, inventive take on learning to give and take, for older preschoolers and young grade schoolers. Booklist Review
In this simple story with sophisticated illustrations, the game for the reader is to find Heidi, who loves to hide and disappears on each page, taking on the patterns of her world (her floral dress camouflages with the couch; her red overalls blend in with a tree). Her three friends are good at hiding, too, but Heidi is better, so hide-and-go-seek becomes her game of choice. When they play at Heidi's birthday party, she's so good that no one can find her so they give up and enjoy the goodies instead, and Heidi realizes it's time to play other games where her friends can excel, too. Woodcock's illustrations are very active. There's dancing and bouncing, climbing and roller-skating. The children, with spindly arms and legs, sail through each activity, arms and legs akimbo. They appear mostly in dark shades of gray and blue, but their world of leaves, balloons, and jungle gyms is colorful. The minimal text does not preach, but the point is clear: everyone likes to do things they are good at.--Ching, Edie Copyright 2017 Booklist
