Abstract:

Penguins are, perhaps, the most loved of birds. We've been fascinated by them for just about as long as we've known they existed. When penguins are on land, their actions appear to us so humorous and expressive that we can be excused for thinking we understand them perfectly, identifying with what looks like moods and foibles similar to our own.

Tui De Roy is a world-renowned wildlife photographer, writer, and conservationist. Her books include Galapagos: Islands Born of Fire (Princeton). Mark Jones and Julie Cornthwaite are partners with De Roy at Roving Tortoise Worldwide Nature Photography in New Zealand. Jones has collaborated with De Roy on several books, including Albatross: Their World, Their Ways .

Booklist Review

The three primary authors are noted wildlife photographers, and their expertise shines in beautiful pictures, many of them at close range, culled from 15 years of penguin encounters. The first section of the narrative highlights a variety of characteristics of penguins in general and those of several species. The second section is made up of 17 essays on the science of penguins and on conservation issues, written by biologists and zoologists specializing in them. The final section is an almanac of information on each breed, with maps, charts, fact sheets, and profiles. Starred Review. Of the many books on perennially popular penguins, this is far and away the best, by any standard. The more than 400 splendid, dramatic photographs show all 18 penguin species, many in the context of the spectacular, remote landscapes where they live. The large (9.5" x 11.75") format showcases first-rate photography, with some shots spread over two facing pages. Perhaps the most arresting images show distant penguins against a backdrop of vast ice formations and snowscapes. Authors De Roy (Galapagos), Mark Jones (coauthor with DeRoy of Albatross), and Julie Cornthwaite, who are partners at Roving Tortoise Worldwide Nature Photography in New Zealand, and 16 others contribute short chapters on a wide range of topics: extinct penguins, research methods, food habits, satellite tracking, etc. Some of the chapters concern where to see the birds, population sizes, the effects of climate change, and conservation. The species profiles are excellent, with sections on conservation status, description, coloration, size, weights, vocalizations, population, distribution, breeding, food, and principal threats. The list of references, however, is cursory. Otherwise this fine book is an outstanding gem. VERDICT Most highly recommended for all interested, whether the lay public or scientists, in natural history and Antarctic and sub-Antarctic places.-Henry T.
