About the Author

Suzanne van der Veeken

Suzanne in five words: explorer, mermaid, environmentalist, creator, and ocean nomad.

For over ten years, she has been slow travelling around the world, of which the last four have been mostly under sail, while living a minimalistic nomad lifestyle as a location independent entrepreneur. She was born and raised in The Netherlands but feels at home anywhere there's water. Her globetrotting has brought her to 45 countries on five continents, on 30 sailboats and travelling 14.000 nautical miles across the seas.

Suzanne has one calling; the ocean. She is most inspired when exploring the beauty of the sea and island destinations through play and outdoor action. She's a 'do it yourself' oceanographer learning about the ocean and nature through sailing, kitesurfing and freediving adventures. She creates ocean related sustainability projects and adventure (sports) content, experiences and expeditions to not just sustain her life but to restore life in the ocean. Her ocean adventures have opened her eyes to the beauty of nature, but also to the challenges the oceans are facing. Her experiences have made Suzanne a passionate ocean advocate and activist.

She occasionally works as a tourism sustainability consultant with specialisation in coastal & island sustainability and tourism destination adaptation to climate change. She completed a Bachelor in Commerce and a cum-laude master in Tourism Destination Management. She published a study on Tourism destinations' vulnerability to climate change: Nature-based tourism in Vava'u, the Kingdom of Tonga in the Sage Journal of Tourism and Hospitality Research. She's an AIDA freedive instructor. Her dream is to sail around the world in her own built green sailboat while making as much impact as possible for a healthier ocean. Her favourite colour is blue. She's obsessed with coconuts and frangipani flowers.

With the book Ocean Nomad, she aims to encourage, inspire, and inform for ocean adventure, action and conservation.
