Jonathan Ames is the author of the novels I Pass Like Night (1989) , The Extra Man (1998) , Wake Up, Sir! (2004) , You Were Never Really Here (2018) ; a graphic novel, The Alcoholic (2008, with artwork by Dean Haspiel) ; and the essay collections What's Not to Love? (2000) , My Less Than Secret Life (2002) , I Love You More Than You Know (2006) , and The Double Life is Twice As Good (2009) . He is also the editor of the anthology, Sexual Metamorphosis (2005) . In addition to books, he is the creator of two television shows: Bored to Death (HBO, 2009-2011) and Blunt Talk (STARZ, 2015-2016) . His novel The Extra Man was adapted as a film, starring Kevin Kline and Paul Dano, and You Were Never Really Here has also been adapted as a film, starring Joaquin Phoenix. Ames is the winner of a Guggenheim Fellowship and at one time had two amateur boxing matches, fighting as "The Herring Wonder."
