About this item

(In French, with English subtitles) Marieme longs for more than what her family, friends, and community can give her.  She wants to go to high school, but her grades are channeling her into vocational school instead.  She has a crush on her brother’s best friend, but her rigid patriarchal community of North Africans in Paris has laid out unwritten rules about family honor.  She longs for something more than a cleaning job like the one her mother has, but her options are very few, leading her ultimately to choose instead a girl gang.  And we go from there in this exploration of a teenager’s journey through adolescence in the outer suburbs of Paris.  While Marieme doesn’t make the best choices for her life, we do long for her to gain some confidence and at least step outside of the rigidity of her society to break free.  Will she do that, and if she does, what will be the consequences?  Sciamma also directed Water Lilies and Tomboy, also owned by HCPL.
