Hi, this is Max's mom. Thank you for visiting Max's page.
Max is a 12-year old boy with autism and he lives in Denver, Colorado. His book, Hello, My Name is Max and I Have Autism was the result of an Autism Awareness event that he organized for his elementary school. Max wanted to do a service project and the result was the first ever Light it up Blue day at Eagleview Elementary.
Max had lots of art around the house as we used art as a form of communication and for dealing with emotions as his words would get stuck. Max and I mounted his art on some foam board and I typed up his art descriptions as he dictated them to me. I was floored by what he told me.
The art show was supposed to be a supplement to the activities, but it turned into much more. After being asked to tour and give talks, Max and I did a crowdfunding and the result is his book. His intention is to help create compassion, awareness and understanding for kids with ASD.
Max is a self-advocate and activist. He gives in-services to groups explaining what autism is like from his perspective. He loves art and learning how to play the saxophone. We are putting together an art show that will feature children on the spectrum in April 2015. The purpose of the show is to celebrate the children as just being kids, making some art and having a good time doing it. It is linked to Max's Blue Ribbon Arts Initiative foundation that provides grants, Art Start Kits, music instrument loans and access to the arts for kids with ASD. His book sales fund his foundation.
Max hopes that his book will help elicit compassion for children on the spectrum and that his words will be of comfort for kids who live with ASD. He wants to be the voice for those who cannot speak. As he was non-verbal until the age of six, he remembers the struggle to communicate and the discrimination we faced as people didn't understand what autism was all about. Instead of being bitter, Max is trying to help other children so they don't have to go through what he experienced. All kids with ASD, regardless of ability, know LOVE and are worthy of compassion.
We appreciate your generosity in purchasing his book. Our meager profits help propel Max's foundation as we pay it forward. Max intends on writing another book in the near future.
