Maria Wilhemina Brandner

At age 5, "Marille" helplessly watched as her father was hauled off to a concentration camp as an "Enemy of the Third Reich." This would be but one of many hardships she endured during her adolescent years growing up near Munich, Germany during WWII.
And yet she not only survived, but thrived.

Maria Wilhemina Brandner (1929-1997) finished her memoir in 1992. Before she could publish, her husband was diagnosed with brain cancer, and after losing him in 1995, she herself faced pancreatic cancer and died in May of 1997.

While we have made family copies of her book over the years, we finally decided that more people should have the opportunity to know this truly amazing woman. Through these pages, you will be inspired and awed by her strength and resourcefulness.

If you are a history buff, you will enjoy the personal accounts of propaganda, the bombings, the Death March, the American Occupation. If you like psychology, you can puzzle at the paradox of puberty and ideology ... did Marille really want to join the Hitler Youth while her father was imprisoned in a concentration camp? And if you just need some perspective on life, you cannot help being inspired by the work ethic, ingenuity and positive attitude Marille displayed in every situation.
