About the Author

Patrick T. McBriarty

Patrick McBriarty is author of the PTM Werks Series of children's picture books designed to inspire future generations of builders, designers, pilots, architects, and engineers. A fun introduction to STEM/STEAM topics the series continues to expand with: Drawbridges Open and Close (Oct. 2014) , Airplanes Take off and Land (April 2015) , and City Railways Go Above and Below (Oct. 2016) .

It wasn't until after earning a Masters in Economics that Patrick learned he should have studied engineering. The result (many years later) is the PTM Werks Series of children's books that he would have wanted as a child -- non-fiction concept books, filled with fanciful animal characters, blending Richard Scarry and David Macaulay to deliver fun, engaging, and informative stories to reveal how things work.

McBriarty's first book was the three-time, award-winning history Chicago River Bridges (Oct. 2013) , which has been praised as entertaining, interesting, and accessible to most anyone interested in Chicago or Chicago history. It was the basis for the PBS documentary Chicago Drawbridges (April 2013) , which he co-produced with filmmaker Stephen Hatch and was broadcast on Chicago and Milwaukee Public Television.
