About this item
In the final book in her Great Lakes Adventure trilogy, Loreen Niewenhuis launches off the shoreline to explore the islands of the Great Lakes Basin. From hiking the rugged wilderness of Isle Royale in Lake Superior to strolling the metropolis on Montreal Island in the St. Lawrence River, Niewenhuis explores key islands in each of the five Great Lakes and their connecting waterways. Biking, hiking, and kayaking, she searches for the fascinating differences and uniting themes of the water-edged islands found throughout this vast freshwater network--the connected ecology of lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario. Together, these Great Lakes and their island outposts provide a vital source of water, a canvas for human culture, and a unique haven for diverse plant and animal species, some of which are endangered.

Loreen Niewenhuis grew up in Michigan and has lived there most of her life. She pursued a life of science, getting a Bachelor, then Master of Science degrees. She worked in various aspects of that world including a hospital laboratory, basic animal research, and a bone marrow transplant group.
While taking a break from this work to raise her sons, Loreen began writing fiction. This evolved into a passion and she returned to school to get her MFA from Spalding University. In 2009, her short story collection, SCAR TISSUE, was a finalist for the Flannery O'Connor Award.
In 2009 she decided to explore Lake Michigan fully by walking around it. The fascinating account of her journey, A 1000-MILE WALK ON THE BEACH: ONE WOMAN'S TREK OF THE PERIMETER OF LAKE MICHIGAN, was released in 2011 by Crickhollow Books. The book spent several weeks on the Heartland Indie Bestseller List in 2011 and won "Best Non-Fiction Beach Read" in 2012.
Loreen's novella, ATLANTA, was released in June 2011 by Main Street Rag Publishing.
In 2012, Loreen took another long walk, this time a 1000-mile hike touching all five Great Lakes. The book about this adventure -- and about the geology, hydrology and ecology of the Great Lakes -- will be released in June of 2013. It is called: A 1000-MILE GREAT LAKES WALK.
