About this item

Beginning in Detroit, US-12 spans 212 miles in southern Michigan. It passes through eight counties and several cities including Ypsilanti, Clinton, Jonesville, Coldwater, Sturgis, Edwardsburg, and New Buffalo before passing into Indiana. It is, or has been, known by several names including Michigan Avenue, the Chicago Road, Sauk Trail, and US-12. The hardbound book is a history of this road, and a compilation of stories hidden for years in local archives, recounted by enthusiastic long time residents and discovered by the authors as they traveled Michigan s second Federal highway, US-12. There are stories that relate to transportation and tourism; stagecoach stops, inns, railroad stations, garages, interurbans and the paving of the roadway and stories of people, famous and otherwise, whose lives have added layers of history to the story of the highway.
