Chris Gatcum

Chris Gatcum has spent his entire career in and around photography, working as a photographer, journalist, and author. Like many aspiring photographers, his career started at college where a degree course taught him a wide range of skills and technologies, covering both studio and location work, large format photography through to the then-emerging digital technology, and, of course, Photoshop. He went on to work as a set-builder on a number of high-end advertising campaigns and as a photographer and retoucher, before joining the UK's longest-standing photography magazine, Amateur Photographer, as technical writer. Since then he has been the technical editor on What Digital Camera, deputy editor on Outdoor Photography, a regular columnist for Black & White Photography, and a contributor to many more photography magazines as well. Chris is also the author of more than a dozen books on photography, ranging from beginner's guides to digital photography, to books on mastering film, and has edited hundreds more photography titles for numerous publishers. This has provided him with a wide-ranging understanding of almost all aspects of photography, from the technologies underlying the construction of today's digital cameras, to the aesthetics and philosophy of Art, to the inner workings of Photoshop. When he isn't wielding a camera (or writing or reading about wielding a camera) , Chris can usually be found peering into the engine of his VW camper van, mopping up oil leaks under his motorcycle, and denying he's a hipster. He currently lives in North Devon, UK.
