Where the Backshooter Waits is set in the town of Castle Rock, where Stuart Dawson has a confrontation with his brother Matt. For some time now Matt has been gambling away all the profits from their ranch. Stuart cuts Matt off, stating he wont pay another gambling debt. So when Stuart is ambushed on the range, but only grazed, he believes Matt was the one who made the attempt.
