When Wade Stagmire rides into the redwood forest country looking for work, he is met with contempt by Ruel Tedrow, the manager of the Hubbard Lumbering Company. But there is a job at Anchor Ranch, owned by Gib Dawson, an older man who is beset by rustlers operating in the district. Wade needs the job and wants it, but being an honest man, he tells Gib Dawson that there is a murder charge hanging over his head. As Wade tells the story, it was a shooting done in self-defense when he was ambushed. Dawson believes him about the shooting and hires him.
