About the Author
Ella Putney Carlson is a photographic illustrator and educator. She has earned the
professional photography degrees of Master Photographer, Master Artist, Craftsman, and
Certified Professional Photographer. She has earned multiple Kodak Gallery Awards, Fuji
Masterpiece Awards and Courts of Honor awards.
She has been teaching at the University of Mass, Lowell, since 1999. In addition, she
teaches various workshops in Photoshop and Corel Painter® for state and regional professional
photography groups. She has also taught classes at New Hampshire Institute of Art, Middlesex
Community College and DeCordova Museum.
Carlson studied photography with Mary Ellen Mark, Joyce Tenneson, Charles Traub,
Brian Lawler and Chris Callis. She studied photography at the Maine Photographic Workshops,
DeCordova Museum, Massachusetts College of Art, and the Rhode Island School of Design.
She is currently enrolled in a Master of Fine Arts program at the New Hampshire Institute of Art.
Her images have been exhibited at private galleries, in multiple Professional
Photographers of America and American Society of Photographers International Exhibits, and at
DeCordova Museum. Her work has been published in several PPA Loan Collection Books,
Professional Photographer Magazine, and the General Showcase Book by PPA.
