Mary Lahr Schier
Mary Lahr Schier knows the joys and trials of cold-climate gardeners. As editor of Northern Gardener, the magazine of the Minnesota State Horticultural Society, Mary has spent more than a decade discovering the best tips and techniques for growing great vegetables and flowers in the North. She combined those ideas with advice from experienced gardeners of the past to write The Northern Gardener: From Apples to Zinnias, an informative and entertaining guide for gardeners of all levels.
A long-time journalist, Mary has written or edited two books of regional history as well as dozens of articles on topics ranging from how to select software to NASCAR. She writes about gardening on her blog, mynortherngarden.com, which won a Silver Award for electronic writing from GWA, the Association of Garden Communicators. She recently moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, where she is building the soil and creating a new garden.
