About this item

The growing group of bird enthusiasts who enjoy feeding and watching their feathered friends will learn how they can expand their activity and help address the pressing issue of habitat loss with 100 Plants to Feed the Birds. In-depth profiles offer planting and care guidance for 100 native plant species that provide food and shelter for birds throughout the year, from winter all the way through breeding and migrating periods. Readers will learn about plants they can add to their gardens and cultivate, such as early-season pussy willow and late-season asters, as well as wild plants to refrain from weeding out, like jewelweed and goldenrod. Others, including 29 tree species, may already be present in the landscape and readers will learn how these plants support the birds who feed and nest in them.

About the Author

Laura Erickson

Laura Erickson has been fascinated with birds since she could stand on the sofa and watch city pigeons out her Chicago two-flat window when she was a toddler. She has been avidly birding since 1975, and since then she has been teaching about birds as a local Audubon society field trip leader, elementary and junior high school teacher, "For the Birds" radio program creator and producer, Brownie and Girl Scout leader, public speaker, and writer. For a few years, she was what she calls a migrant worker, migrating between her house and husband in Duluth, Minnesota, and her job as Science Editor at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, New York. But she was homesick and returned to Minnesota for good. Now she's a contributing editor and columnist for BirdWatching magazine, and still working on "For the Birds," which has been on the air for 30 years. Wherever she is, she's likely to have her dog Pip along, and to be living with her cat Kasey (once a feral cat who lived on songbirds but now strictly an indoor cat) and her licensed education Eastern Screech-Owl, Archimedes. She has three wonderful adult children, all who care about birds and the environment. Her website, which provides easy access to 30 years of radio programs and all her photographs, is at www.lauraerickson.com.
