Described here are African American men and women who have contributed to the advancement of science including inventions. These individuals have contributed in large and small ways that might have been overlooked when chronicling the history of science. African Americans have made many significant contributions to science and medicine since their arrival in America. During the period of segregation an unknown number of African Americans did not acknowledge their status as Negroes for their own reasons.
