About this item

Hannah Webber fears she will never be a mother, but her prayers are finally answered when she gives birth to a son. In an era of high-stakes parenting, nurturing Sam's intellect becomes Hannah's life purpose. She invests body and soul into his development, much to the detriment of her marriage. She convinces herself, however, that Sam's acceptance at age fourteen to the most prestigious of New England boarding schools overseen by an illustrious headmaster, justifies her choices. When he arrives at Dunning, Sam is glad to be out from under his mother's close watch. And he enjoys his newfound freedom -- until, late one night, he stumbles upon evidence of sexual misconduct at the school and is unable to shake the discovery. Both a coming-of-age novel and a portrait of an evolving mother-son relationship, The Nine is the story of a young man who chooses to expose a corrupt world operating under its own set of rules -- even if it means jeopardizing his mother's hopes and dreams.

About the Author

Jeanne McWilliams Blasberg

Always hunting for writerly detail, I've been known to stare or eavesdrop on the table next to me. Call it research or maybe an over-developed sense of empathy; I'm fascinated by human nature. At heart, I'm really still that only child who played for hours with imaginary friends. Now my imaginary friends are characters on the page, flawed but honest, people worth spending time with. My stories may echo timeless struggles, but they are spun with my own peculiar slant.Set in New England, my novels focus on familial relationships, primarily the challenges mothers face when they bow to societal expectations before their own intuition. My most recent novel, The Nine (She Writes Press '19) is the winner of the Foreward Indies Gold Award in Thriller & Suspense and Juror's Choice in the National Indie Excellence Awards, among others. Eden (She Writes Press '17) , was an Amazon bestseller, winner of the Benjamin Franklin Silver Award for Best New Voice in Fiction, and a finalist for the and Sarton's Women's Book Award for Historical Fiction. I sit on the boards of the Boston Book Festival and GrubStreet, one of the country's leading creative writing centers, where I am developing my next novel. My husband and I have three grown children and split time between Boston, MA and Westerly, RI. When not writing, I can be found playing squash, skiing, or taking in the glorious sunsets over Little Narragansett Bay.I love to hear from readers and I am happy to participate in book group discussions.
