About the Author

Monica Starkman

Monica Starkman, M.D. is a psychiatrist and a novelist. The End of Miracles draws on her decades of experience with psychosomatic medicine, infertility, depression and psychotherapy. While a gripping and suspenseful novel, The End of Miracles is also deeply and intimately psychological. The book also realistically portrays how psychiatrists think and how they design treatment plans for their patients.

Monica Starkman's clinical sub-specialties include consultation about patients in the general medical hospital. Her many publications include articles on false pregnancy (pseudocyesis) and psychological reactions to the fetal monitor. In The End of Miracles, these psychiatric interests and experiences are transformed into emotionally moving literature.

Monica Starkman is an associate professor of Psychiatry and researcher at the University of Michigan Medical School's Department of Psychiatry. A faculty member of the University of Michigan Depression Center, she is also a recognized expert on the effects of stress hormones on mood and brain structures, and the principal investigator of several research grants from the National Institutes of Health.
