About this item

NEW EDITION, REVISED AND UPDATED Since the Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling that the rights of things - money and corporations - matter more than the rights of people, America has faced a crisis of democracy. In this timely and thoroughly updated second edition, Jeff Clements describes the strange history of this bizarre ruling, its ongoing destructive effects, and the growing movement to reverse it. He includes a new chapter, "Do Something!," showing how - state by state and community by community - Americans are using creative strategies and tools to renew democracy and curb unbalanced corporate power. Since the first edition, 16 states, 160 members of Congress, and 500 cities and towns have called for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United, and the list is growing. This is a fight we can win!

About the Author

Jeffrey D. Clements

I live and work in Concord, Massachusetts, not far from Walden Pond and the North Bridge over the Concord River, where the American Revolution began. Since 1988, I've represented people and businesses as an attorney, and have served as an Assistant Attorney General in Massachusetts. Following the Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United v. FEC in 2010, when the Supreme Court empowered corporations, regardless of size or global reach, to spend unlimited money in our elections, I co-founded Free Speech for People (www.freespeechforpeople.org). We are part of the growing movement for the People's Rights Amendment to overturn Citizens United and take back our government and Bill of Rights for people.I hope that you enjoy my book, Corporations Are Not People, and that you join the growing national debate and reform campaign to rebuild that rarest of things: A peaceful republic of free and equal people. Please check in at my blog, www.corporationsarenotpeople.com, and let me know what you think. Thanks.
