About the Author

William R. Marchand MD

William R. Marchand, MD is a board-certified academic psychiatrist. He is currently a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Utah School of Medicine and the Chief of Psychiatry at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, both in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is the author of Depression and Bipolar Disorder: Your Guide to Recovery and Mindfulness for Bipolar Disorder: How Mindfulness and Neuroscience Can Help You Manage Your Bipolar Symptoms as well as many scientific publications. In addition to writing and teaching mindfulness, Dr. Marchand is involved in mental health administration, research, the clinical treatment of psychiatric disorders and medical education.

Dr. Marchand's research has focused on using functional brain imaging to study the neurobiology of depression, bipolar disorder and suicide as well as increase our understanding of normal brain function. His clinical work is aimed at helping those with major depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety disorders.

His personal mindfulness practice is as an ordained monk in the Soto Zen tradition. Dr. Marchand combines the latest research in psychiatry and neuroscience with the ancient wisdom of meditation practices to help others live happier and more satisfying lives through mindfulness.
