About the Author
Leslie Conron Carola
Leslie Conron CarolaI love books. I love reading them - books of all kinds; and I love creating them - mostly illustrated books. Lucky for me I was born into a book-and-music-loving family. (Maybe that's a nature-nurture discussion!) A frequent comment from my father when I was a child was "See it clearly. Take your time. Don't just look. See it. See it with your mind's eye." And that is how books take shape for me, most often from a very simple idea. A BA in Theatre (with a minor in English and Fine Arts) eventually led to publishing. Interest in the total process of creating and producing illustrated books included concept development, graphic design, editorial, and production. The process of writing evolved for me from the process of researching and developing concepts for books. For more than twenty-five years I have had the pleasure of working in the publishing industry (Harper & Row, The Metropolitan Opera Guild, Taunton Press, Hugh Levin Associates, and my own Arena Books Associates, LLC) , creating books in fields ranging from college humanities textbooks (English, Theater, Music) to children's books, to special interest books on opera, lifestyle, cultural history, and how-to crafts. I have edited text and pictures, handled production of the books; and some I have written. The evolution of an illustrated book from concept to finished product is an exhilarating journey, one filled with seemingly endless questions, the answers to which provide fodder for more thought and questions. The visual dialogue carries its own weight, just as the text does, each one supporting and pushing the other. An exciting and stimulating challenge¬¬; theatre itself.
