About the Author

John Kubiniec

John is a native of North Tonawanda, NY (a suburb of Buffalo, NY) and grew up in a family of crafters. His formal training is that of a church musician and he holds a MA degree in Church Music from St. Joseph's College, Rensselaer, Indiana. His church music work took him to Rochester, NY; Richmond, VA; N. Andover, MA; and finally New York City.

John has always enjoyed handwork (embroidery and cross-stitch) and became interested in ceramics. He studied ceramics at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Mudflats Pottery Studio (Sommerville, MA) and Greenwich House Pottery (NYC) . He also served as a studio assistant for ceramic artist Bruce Winn.

He always had an interest in quilting and while living in New York City he finally began to indulge in that passion by taking classes at The City Quilter in NYC. You can also find him most summers at Quilting By the Lake ( quiltingbythelake.com ) taking a class or working in studio. In 2010 he decided on a whim to enter the McCall's Quilting Design Star Challenge. He was one of 174 finalists and was one of the 7 runner ups in the final round. After that he began designing patterns for various fabric companies (Windham Fabrics, RJR Fabrics and Red Rooster Fabrics) His patterns have also appeared in various quilting magazines including McCall's Quilting, McCall's Quick Quilts, and Fons & Porter Easy Quilts. In 2013 his pattern "Pinwheels" appeared in the book "Classic Modern Quilts" published by Kansas City Star

In 2014 he moved back to Rochester NY with his partner and harpist Ray Pool ( raypool.com ) .He is a member of the Rochester Modern Quilt Guild and Genesee Valley Quilt Club. He continues to be involved with church music, serving as organist at Gates Presbyterian Church and he maintains a longarm quilting and quilting design studio - Big Rig Quilting. He teaches in the Rochester area and travels extensively sharing his techniques and love of quilting. In his spare time he enjoys gardening and cooking.
