About the Author

Valerie Peterson

Valerie Peterson's storytelling extends to books, television, film, and video/web.

She was a finalist for the 2015 CBS TV Writers Mentoring Program. Her TV procedural / mystery drama pilot, Reconciling Jimmy, achieved Second Rounder status in the 2015 Austin Film Festival Screenwriters Festival and was a Quarterfinalist in the ScreenCraft TV Pilot Launch competition. The Maid of Honor, a narrative comedic short film Valerie wrote and directed, was an Official Selection of the Sedona International Film Festival and her Jane Austen / time travel screenplay, The Jane Austen Syndrome, has been recognized by numerous screenplay competitions, including those sponsored by The Austin Film Festival, Cinequest, The Big Apple Film Festival, and MORE magazine.

The author of the "entertainingly irreverent"* Peterson's Holiday Helper and Peterson's Happy Hour humor/cocktail books (Random House/Clarkson Potter) , Valerie is the co-author (with Janice Fryer) of Cookie Craft (a backlist bestseller!) and Cookie Craft Christmas cookie decorating how-to books (Storey Publishing/Workman) . She also occasionally writes for publications such as the New York Times.

Valerie is currently completing her first novel, which is very long and involves intertwining mysteries, book publishing, epistolary elements, and at least two dead bodies.

Prior to focusing on her own creative work, Valerie held strategy and marketing positions at corporations and book publishers including Random House and Doubleday, where she produced videos and developed marketing campaigns for authors like James Lee Burke and Robert Crais. She was the head of marketing for the cookbook / gardening and travel book divisions at John Wiley Publishers where she had the honor of working with such venerated authors, franchises, brands, and household names as Mark Bittman, the Culinary Institute of America, Betty Crocker, and Frommers Guides.

She is the resident Book Publishing Expert for About.com and continues to use her strategic branding and marketing skills to help companies, entrepreneurs and writers more effectively get their own stories into the world.

Originally from Yonkers, New York, Valerie now lives in Manhattan. She is often compelled to write about herself in the third person.
