About this item

A sweeping and masterful cultural history, "Here's to My Sweet Satan" tells how the Occult conquered the American imagination, weaving together topics as diverse as the birth of heavy metal, 1970s horror films, the New Age movement, Count Chocula cereal, the serial killer Son of Sam, and more. Cultural critic George Case explores how the Occult craze permanently changed American society, creating the cultural framework for the political power of the religious right, false accusations of Satanic child abuse, and today's widespread rejection of science and rationality. An insightful blend of pop culture and social history, "Here's to My Sweet Satan" lucidly explains how the most technological society on earth became enthralled by the supernatural.

About the Author

George Case

Welcome to my Author Central! I'm a Canadian writer with eight books to my credit, whose topics range from rock 'n' roll to personal memoir, and from speculative fiction to cultural criticism. My shorter pieces have been published in the Vancouver Sun daily newspaper, the Vancouver Review literary quarterly, the US social science journal Skeptic, and in a number of anthologies. I've been featured in interviews and profiles broadcast on CBC television and radio, Fox News, and classic rock radio stations in Canada, the US, and Great Britain. I can also be found blogging at georgecaseblog.wordpress.com.

What will you find in my books? My literary models are George Orwell (for his clarity of thought and power of rhetoric) , F. Scott Fitzgerald (for his almost musical sense of rhythm and diction) , and film reviewer Stanley Kauffmann (for his perceptive critical insights) - but I also try to make my writing accessible to readers encountering my subjects for the first time. If there's a recurring theme to my work, it may be something to do with the relevance of the past in the present, the importance of cultural literacy, and a detached take on the noisy to-and-fro of modern and postmodern discourse.

At any rate, curl up in a quiet outer or inner space with one of these titles, and get to know me through them. My words and my thoughts are waiting to engage with you.
