After Grover Stone loses both his parents, the 20-year-old decides to leave New York City and follow his lifelong dream of living out West. He can hardly wait to explore the folklore of outlaws and famous lawmen he has read about since childhood. Grover goes to Montana, where he crosses the state on horseback. On his trek, he runs into a gang ready to kill him for his supplies. Escaping with his life, Grover settles down in northwest Montana, where he becomes a cowboy, and later a buys a ranch, the Bar C. After an affair with a dancehall girl, Grover's illegitimate son is born. Grover wins custody of the child and hires a nanny to take care of the baby. Grover ends up marrying the nanny, but then the real birth mother returns and wants her son back.
