About the Author

Jeanne Besser

I was fourteen before I discovered that "homemade" cakes didn't start with a Betty Crocker box. After tasting the first red velvet cake I made from scratch, I had an epiphany. I could never go back to using a packaged mix. I began to bake with a vengeance. Twenty years later my first cookbook, The First Book of Baking, featuring all of my favorite recipes perfected over those many years, was published. My love of experimenting in the kitchen continued with Working Mom's Fast and Easy One-Pot Cooking, (yes, really only one pot to wash!) filled with recipes that helped me feed my growing family with the minimum cleanup required (who had time for washing pots and pans with a baby and a toddler? ) As my kids grew and our lives got busier, providing meals for my brood FAST was my priority. My column for the Atlanta Journal & Constitution newspaper, morphed into my third cookbook, The 5:30 Challenge: 5 Ingredients, 30 Minutes, Dinner on the Table. That's right, only five ingredients, not just for main courses, but even for desserts! As my kids turned into six-foot-tall teenagers, I saw how important it was to nourish them with nutritious meals made with fresh and flavorful ingredients to keep them healthy and to help them establish life-long, mindful eating practices. I was lucky enough to partner with The American Cancer Society to help spread its message on how to eat right to stay healthy with both the The Great American Eat-Right Cookbook and The New Healthy Eating Cookbook. Both books show that healthy eating does not mean giving up flavor. I included recipes for all my family's favorite foods - tacos, burrito bowls, pastas, stir-fries, risotto, and even eggplant parmesan, but with a lighter touch. Give them a try - your body will thank you. My interest in overall wellbeing spurred me to collaborate on my following three books, two more cookbooks with the American Cancer Society- What to Eat During Cancer Treatment (volumes 1 & 2) and Tell Me The Truth, Doctor: Easy-to-Understand Answers to Your Most Confusing and Critical Health Questions, written with my husband, Dr. Richard Besser, Medical Editor at ABC News at the time. Both of these provide so much helpful information -- whether you are experiencing a health crisis, or, trying to avoid one.
