FIREFIGHTING IS A JOB THAT OFFERS excitement and the satisfaction of helping people, while also involving danger and long, irregular hours. Fires take thousands of lives and destroy billions of dollars worth of property each year. Flooding is somewhat predictable, as is damage from ice storms, hurricanes, tornadoes and other disasters. But fire can begin because of faulty wiring in the wall or from human intention in the case of arson. It is unpredictable and stealthy. Fire is even more frightening because at the basic human level, we have always needed fire to survive. Yet it can turn on us in an instant and destroy everyone and everything we hold dear.Firefighters are, as everyone knows, those people who fight fires and help to prevent them through educating the public about safety measures and performing inspections of public buildings to ensure code adherence.
