Cris Arbo
Cris Arbo was born on Martha's Vineyard Island, Massachusetts, the sixth of seven children. She received her BA from William Paterson University in New Jersey with a major in art and a minor in theater arts.She worked in England as a background artist, tracer and painter on animated feature films, half-hour cartoons and T.V. commercials. Studios included Jack Stokes Cartoons, Halas and Bachelor, Euromation and Richard Williams Animation. Other commissions came from such clients as the University of London, the BBC and the Sephiroth Dance Theatre. Cris also worked as art director for the Dance Centre, Covent Garden, where she had been studying classical and modern ballet. In addition to murals she produced advertising and illustration for their dance magazine.As a vocalist with the London Philharmonic Choir she performed and recorded with the London Philharmonic, The London Symphony, the BBC Choral Society and the New Philharmonia under the batons of many of the world's most renowned conductors. She also performed for a time with the Hans Sachs Cor in Nuremberg, Germany; with the Commonwealth Chorale in Virginia; and the Virginia Consort.In the New York area she worked as background artist for a New York PBS special on the orchestra, and on illustration & advertising art for such clients as Franklin Watts and Fredrick Warne. Vocal appearances continued with the Masterworks Chorus, the Pro Arte Chorale and Chamber Singers, and as soloist with the North Jersey Consort.A mother of four daughters, Cris continues to paint murals, book and magazine illustration, advertising and private commissions. Clients have included Donning Publishing, Berkley Books, A.R.E. Press, Hampton Roads, and Union Camp. "The Dandelion Seed", a children's picture book written by Joseph Anthony and illustrated by Cris Arbo was released by Dawn Publications in 1997. It received the 1998 Benjamin Franklin Award Silver Medal and has been used as a McGraw/Hill early reader in the New York City public schools for several years. A second collaboration for Dawn, "In A Nutshell", was released in 1999 and was awarded the Parent Council® Outstanding Selection for 2000, and selected for the 2002-03 'Young Reader's Program' of the Virginia State Reading Association. Both titles have a growing list of foreign language publishers.Cris' title , "All Around Me", I See by Laya Steinberg (Dawn Publications 2005) was listed as a "Bank Street Best Book" for 2006."In The Trees, Honeybees" by Lori Mortensen (Dawn Publications, 2009) won the Izaak Walton League Of America Book of the Year, 2009; New England Book Festival Honorable Mention, 2009; Moonbeam Children's Book Award, Silver, 2009; Mom's Choice Award, Gold, 2009; Disney's iParenting Media Award, 2009; Skipping Stones Honor Award, 2010; Florida Reading Association Children's Book Award List, 2010; Children's Book Council/
