About this item

Just how far will Ellie May go to be chosen as class flag leader during the exciting week leading up to Presidents' Day?Quirky and funny, second-grader Ellie May enjoys learning about US presidents. But she absolutely loves the idea of being class flag leader during the week before Presidents' Day. Tired of not being chosen to hold the flag, she makes it her mission to finally get picked. Along the way, Ellie May ends up karate chopping the class plant when she tries to determine whether George Washington actually chopped down that cherry tree. Next she takes apart the class pencil sharpener when she learns that Abraham Lincoln liked learning how gadgets work. Ellie May may not be perfect like Miss-Know-it-All Ava or calm like her best friend Lizzy, but she's good-hearted and eventually realizes that honesty and patience go a long way.

About the Author

Hillary Homzie

As a kid growing up in Charlottesville, Virginia, Hillary Homzie understood how to build a fort in the woods, read under the covers, and playact complex scenarios involving poisoned acorns and orphans. However, she never mastered good comebacks to bullies or how to be cool in middle school, so she studied what she didn't know, and now writes about it. Hillary's humorous books for kids (with plenty of funny comebacks) include the Alien Clones From Outer Space chapter book series, which was developed into an animated television show for ABC Australia. Her books about middle school girl culture include Things Are Gonna Get Ugly, The Hot List, Queen of Likes, and Pumpkin Spice Secrets. Hillary apprenticed comedy by performing sketch in NYC with midnight shows at places like Don't Tell Mama and Schecky's Big Fat Cantina. She currently lives in Northern, California with her family. During the summer, she teaches at Hollins University Graduate Program in Children's Literature. She also blogs for the Mixed Up Files of Middle Grade Authors
