This DVD collection includes animated presentations of the children's books by William Steig, as well as a live-action profile of the writer. Sylvester and the Magic Pebble is based upon the Caldecott Medal book. Narrated by John Lithgow, this animated tale tells the story of the Duncan family and their son Sylvester, who turns himself into a rock to escape a hungry lion. The Amazing Bone is based upon the Caldecott Honor and tells the tale of Pearl, a pig, and a talking bone, as they try to outwit a band of highway robbers and a hungry fox. Doctor De Soto, based upon the Newbery Honor book, is the story of a mouse dentist who treats all animals except those that eat mice, until one day, a fox comes to him with a toothache and begs Doctor De Soto to relieve his pain. Brave Irene tells the story of young girl who must summons up all her courage in the face of a nasty snowstorm in order to deliver a ball gown to the duchess. Getting to Know William Steig is a live-action documentary profiling the life of the "New Yorker" cartoonist and popular children's books.



About the Author

William Steig

William Steig (1907-2003) published his first children's book, Roland the Minstrel Pig, in 1968, and received the Caldecott Medal for Sylvester and the Magic Pebble (978-1416902065) in 1970. His works also include The Amazing Bone, a Caldecott Honor Book, and Abel's Island and Doctor De Soto, both Newbery Honor Books. His most recent books published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux are Shrek! (released by DreamWorks as a major motion picture) and Wizzil, illustrated by Quentin Blake. School Library Journal named Shrek! a Best Book of 1990 and said of it, "Steig's inimitable wit and artistic dash have never been sharper or more expertly blended."
