About this item

Whether it's on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Grand Theft Auto, Hulu, Starz, YouTube, or any other TV show, movie, game, app or the like, the average American over the age of 14 spends some 12.5 hours a day on digital devices. That's a whole lot more than we sleep! Yet, more and more research is raising a red flag about the negative impacts - the vice - of too much device time. For example, rigorous studies have found that the more we use Facebook, the less healthy and the less satisfied we are with our lives; that watching violent movies and playing first-person shooter games can desensitize us; that media messages about our bodies can cause serious depression; and that specifically tailored complex algorithms make the pull on our attention nearly impossible to resist.
