About this item

This powerful memoir traces Brazilian-born American Julie Lindahl's journey to uncover her grandparents' roles in the Third Reich as she is driven to understand how and why they became members of Hitler's elite, the SS. Out of the unbearable heart of the story - the unclaimed guilt that devours a family through the generations - emerges an unflinching will to learn the truth. In a remarkable six-year journey through Germany, Poland, Paraguay, and Brazil, Julie uncovers, among many other discoveries, that her grandfather had been a fanatic member of the SS since 1934. During World War II, he was responsible for enslavement and torture and was complicit in the murder of the local population on the large estates he oversaw in occupied Poland. He eventually fled to South America to evade a new wave of war-crimes trials.

About the Author

Julie Lindahl

Prior to embarking on my journey of becoming a thinker about health, wellbeing and good society, I worked as a management consultant for various multinational companies including Ramboll and KPMG Management Consulting. During this time I travelled to some of the poorest and most troubled countries of the world and was struck by the urgent responsibility that we in the more advanced parts of the world have to bring our own houses in order. The future of countless marginalized people depends on it.I am privileged to have lived and worked on all of the continents of the world. I experienced childhood in ten different countries on three continents and went on to work in many more. I speak English, German and Swedish but I have learned that if you share the same objectives and values you can work together in any language. So far, my books have focused on a special source of information and knowledge: a small island in Sweden where I learned a great deal about life. They are about discovering a home in an unexpected place, and about finding fulfilment in an unexpected life. Visit my personal web site at http://www.julielindahl.com.
