About the Author

Patti Lawson

I am an attorney and author living in West Virginia. My first book, THE DOG DIET: WHAT MY DOG TAUGHT ME ABOUT SHEDDING POUNDS, LICKING STRESS, AND GETTING A NEW LEASH ON LIFE (HCI Books, 2006) is the story of the first year my adopted dog Sadie and I spent together. For both of us it was a year of learning many things, but one thing Sadie and all dogs never have to learn is how to love. I however, did learn a great deal about love from Sadie and I fell in love with her and the world of dogs.
Since that first book, I went on to write a newspaper column for the Charleston Gazette in Charleston, WV. "DOGS...DIETS...DATING was a humorous view of all three topics. It ran in the Gazette for almost 5 years. I also write for Huff Post, AOL Paw Nation, a legal column in Central PA Pet Magazine, and many other venues.
My new book was written over a span of about 7 years as I learned that caring for my dog meant more than food and water and exercise. As a lawyer, I must protect her rights and keep her safe from harm. My research ended with the publication of 'WHAT HAPPENS TO ROVER WHEN THE MARRIAGE IS OVER? AND OTHER DOGGONE LEGAL DILEMMAS." (Skyhorse Publishing, 2016) This book is a MUST read for pet parents...a very easy common language legal guide to understand the court system and your canine companion.
I am VERY proud of this book and the cover dog? He is RUSTY my sweet boy dog who was presented to me on FB as a Sadie look-a-like that needed rescued from a rural WV high kill shelter. I said I'd take him and "find him a home" and I did...with me. He has made our home more complete with his kind and grateful spirit. He came to me dirty, dejected and abandoned. Today he is happy, a beautiful red color and loves being brushed, and so happy.
In November 2015 i married the two-legged love of my life, my husband Rodney Morrison. We are now a complete pack of four.
I advise dog organizations, rescues, shelters and individuals on legal dog problems. I work full time as a trial attorney and write a blog on my website: www.pattilawson.com
Coming February 5, 2017...a new column in the Charleston Gazette Mail which you can subscribe to or read on line!
