Dessert decides that she needs a plan to get back on her familys radarand hopefully make them all feel like dirt for a change. Let there be lightbulbs! Dessert has an idea. All she has to do is win her classrooms invention contest, which should be a piece o cake. But, things get worse before they get better...so bad, Dessertwouldneed all the double fudge sundaes in the world to make her feel like herself againor maybe just a surprising new friend.

About the Author

Hallie Durand

I grew up in the farm country of upstate New York, at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains--there was lots of blackberry picking, pigs and chickens, cats and kittens, bikes, bees, homemade bread-and-butter pickles, sweet corn, and pure maple syrup. Lots of wood-stacking and lawn-mowing, too. My sisters and I (and later my brother) spent a lot of time making tiny campfires in the driveway and singing loudly in the hay barn. I still think of myself as a country girl in New York City, where I headed straight after college. Many years have passed and I'm still in love with the place--all these millions of people living together in relative peace--the sound and the stink and the beauty and the buildings--it's where I feel most myself.

Until now I've published all of my work under this pen name, my Dessert trilogy and my three picture books: Mitchell's License (Mitchell Goes Driving in pb) , Mitchell Goes Bowling, and Catch That Cookie!. But my first stand-alone middle-grade novel will be published under my own name, Holly M. McGhee, by Candlewick Press in Spring 2017.
