About the Author

Gila Hayes

Gila Hayes came to the study of firearms for self defense upon recognition that dangers posed by violent crime exceeded the defense skills she'd learned in the martial arts dojo. Intense study of armed self defense ensued, leading to training with Massad Ayoob, John Farnam, Louis Awerbuck, Clint Smith, Chuck Taylor, Ken Hackathorn, Jim Cirillo, and others. She went on to complete instructor programs including Staff Instructor for the Lethal Force Institute, certification through the National Law Enforcement Training Center, the Heckler and Koch International Training Division, Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission's Police Firearms Instructor certification, American Women's Self Defense Association, and the National Rifle Association. Twice, she has taught at the annual training conference of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers and has presented at the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors' regional training conference.Since 1993, she has been a staff instructor for the Firearms Academy of Seattle, teaching gun safety and armed self defense in both the handgun and shotgun programs at the academy. She served as a reserve police officer between 1997 and 2007, primarily tasked with providing firearms training.Hayes is one of three founding leaders of the Armed Citizens' Legal Defense Network, Inc., a membership organization formed for the legal protection of Network members after using deadly force in self defense. Education to increase understanding of issues relating to use of deadly force in self defense as well as the follow-on legal issues is a big part of the Network's more immediate services to members. To this end, Hayes produces a monthly journal published online at www.armedcitizensnetwork.org as well as overseeing the day to day operation of the Network.
